The second step of sending humans to Mars will be the establishment of an extended presence in the lunar vicinity (Cis-lunar). To this end NASA has established the framework of a Cis-lunar platform known as the Deep Space Gateway (DSG). By combining key features of the Space Launch System, Orion spacecraft, International Space Station, and the Asteroid Re-direct Mission; a fully functional DSG can be constructed by 2025. With the establishment of this capability both lunar surface missions and interplanetary expeditions will be staged. The dinner lecture will focus on the key features that will be combined from the existing suite of major NASA programs to establish the DSG.
